What are Headaches – General Information?

As per the definition, headache is a pain located over the eyes, head and going to the temples or at the base of the skull. The pain can be throbbing, jabbing, steady, intense and burning. What are headaches and what are the different symptoms of headaches?

There are different types of headaches, depending on their nature and origin. The most common type is the tension headache. It is due to prolonged tightening of the scalp muscle agitated by depression, too much thinking, anxiety and unresolved conflicts. Another type is the migraine headache. The usual symptom of this headache is light and sound sensitivity, visual trouble, vomiting and nausea. It can also be due to hormonal imbalance in most women. There are certain headaches related to other diseases such as brain tumors, hemorrhage, head injury, hypertension, sinusitis, and meningitis.

What are headaches warning signs? These are the conditions that need an immediate medical attention. If you suffer from intense headache accompanied with stiff neck, nausea and light sensitivity or photophobia, if you experience headache after a head injury, if some parts of your body is numbed or unresponsive, a weakness of your arms and legs; and if your first headache lasts for more than 24 hours. These indications and signs can be a result of a much more serious health problem and you need to see your health care provider to conduct a proper diagnosis.

What are headaches triggering factors? There are a lot of factors that can initiate your daily headaches. Triggering factors differ from one person to another depending on the individual’s condition. Usually it will take two or more triggers to generate the chemical reaction that results of headache attacks. It is important to keep a record of the headache attack in order to reveal the pattern of what triggering factor stands out or most often experienced. The journal or headache diary should include information about weather condition, food consumed, and menstrual cycle for women, physical and psychological stress as well as emotional stress. It should also include the time of the attack, duration, severity and site of the headache. Listed below are the most common headache triggers which increase the incidence of the attack:

1.)  Environmental Factors which include the sensitivity to bright lights, loud noises, cigarette smoke or perfume. Atmospheric pressure and weather conditions like hot or cold weather.

2.)  Dietary Factors such as chocolates, nuts, cheese, caffeinated beverages and foods containing excessive monosodium glutamate.

What are headaches treatment and medication? The most common treatment for headache is analgesic or over the counter pain reliever. There are alternative treatments as well such as wellness programs, acupuncture, acupressure, and water therapy. Knowing what causes headaches is the best way to prevent and to cure them by solving the factors or underlying reasons that are causing them.
